Books

all of them are about astronomy

The Cosmic Perspective

One of Mark’s greatest privileges has been to co-author this textbook series with partners Jeff Bennett, Nick Schneider, and Megan Donahue.

Now in its 10th edition, this book is the big one, suitable for a two-semester course.

The Essential Cosmic Perspective

This shorter version of the big book is more suitable for one-semester courses that cover the whole universe. We use it here at Michigan State University. It’s now in its 9th edition.

The Cosmic Perspective: Fundamentals

This version is for instructors seeking a short textbook that covers all the major topics in astronomy in less than 300 pages. It is now in its third edition.

The Solar System

This book, a subset of the two-semester version, is designed for a one-semester course focusing on Sun, planets, and moons of our solar system.

Stars, Galaxies, and Cosmology

Another subset of the two-semester version, designed for a one-semester course covering the universe beyond our solar system.

Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe

This book of Hubble photographs was prepared as a companion book to the traveling Smithsonian exhibition of the same name.

There’s also a French-language version, translated by Marc Voline.
